Good Idea, Bad Execution June 22, 2010 S. L. Smiley (Warren, MI USA) The issue of soldiers stationed overseas and all of the issues they deal with related to loneliness and stress about what is going on back home are very serious and important. So while I like the idea and storyline of "Dear John" I just simply did not think the execution was very good. The writing was amateurish and the characters were all very one-dimensional. I would like to see what a more capable writer could do with this same story.
depressing, not very believable June 20, 2010 H. Mayer (New Hampsha) I did not like this book. I'm a big Nicholas Sparks fan, but this one was disappointing. I simply didn't buy that John and Savannah really loved each other. In his book Nights in Rodanthe, the characters also fall in love very quickly, but in that one it was believable. He made you feel the emotions along with the characters, but not in this one. John and Savannah fought very immaturely, and honestly Savannah wasn't all that likable. Too much of the story was told in a boring, past tense, "this happened, then this happened, and then this happened" type of way. It was monotonous. And then the ending. I've read a lot of Spark's books, and I know that they often end sad or bittersweet, but usually they feel right to me. They make me sad, but I see how they fit the story and I get over it. This book left me feeling uncomfortable, like something really hadn't gone right. The fact that they still loved each other, but weren't together... I just couldn't make it sit right with me. And no, I don't need a hollywood happy ending to like a book, but with this book I thought one was coming, and then when it didn't, it just left me really disappointed. Maybe this is because I've been in a long distance relationship for the last year and a half. Maybe it hit too close to home. I don't know. But to summarize, the love didn't feel real (at least not at first), Savannah wasn't particularly likable, and the plot progressed with an odd pace, with too few details in places where they should have been. It almost felt like the book wasn't about John and Savannah's relationship at all, but about John's life in the military. And the ending is depressing.
Horror Story for Soldiers June 18, 2010 concerned reader 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a screwed-up thing to make a romance novel out of. (Yes, I realize it was written for women with no exposure to the military and only romantic notions of undying love to go on.) For deployed military personnel, a spouse or fiance is often all that's keeping them going and suicide can result from things like this. Romantic? Hardly. Savannah is a no good cheatin' 'ho. No way would John sell his father's coin collection to help her out when the new hubby gets cancer after that-- Made your choice tramp! No you can't come back when he's dead! Save your money, buy something else. This is just sad.
I really liked it!! June 11, 2010 Christi (Arkansas USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really liked this book. I was everything that your first love makes you feel and all the heartbreak that comes with losing it. By the end of the book I was sobbing uncontrollably. But it was worth each and every tear.
BITTERSWEET June 9, 2010 Deborah Kip (Boca Raton, FL) I just finished reading Dear John last night and I was so drained by the end. It was a great book that lit so many emotions. I now have read two of Sparks' books which inclued The Last Song. I loved the way Dear John was written and I felt as if I was a part of the story which lends to an excellent author! I was so upset with the ending though. I guess all romances don't end in happiness. But, here John learns so many lessons. I would love to see a Dear John, The Sequel. I want to see Savannah with John and a happy ending for both. She still loved him and he still loved her and to complete all the emotions that Sparks' takes his reader through I feel he should publish another Dear John book part 2 with twists and turns but a happy, fulfilling ending. "Sigh", I'm so drained from this novel! I want to see them together!
