4 out of 5 stars Must have for any Poker Player   June 8, 2009
Seth Death (Panama City, FL)
I thought I knew how to play poker before I read this book. All I really knew were the rules. I learned very quickly that "How" to play is completly different. Doyle breaks down the game in a way that was unfathomable to me before reading his book. There is such an incredible gold mine of information here that I was forced to use only two or three of his tips until those became second nature. I then added a few more tips and so on. I first read this book over three years ago and I still turn to it constantly and I learn something new every time. I've since read many other poker books and the only one that comes close to being this complete is some of Phil Hellmuth's stuff. Read this book. You won't regret it.

3 out of 5 stars Super System isn't so super   April 16, 2009
B. Fleischman (denver co)
Not that impressed with the book. I felt others are better. Nice thing about this book however, is it covers more games than just holdem. It is more about theory than nitty gritty details (like what starting hands to begin with) Covers alot of reading your opponent, but Caro's book is better. I found it OK, not stellar, but OK. I wouldn't recommend this as your only poker book - but as a secondary book it is acceptable.

5 out of 5 stars Learn From The Best   March 19, 2009

Get into the mind of one of the greats.Doyle has been there done that, you can feel it when you first crack open the book.I actually started playing better.

5 out of 5 stars Texas Dolly remains nearly unmatched.   February 22, 2009
Jarc23 (Tennessee, USA)
When it was written it was called the greatest poker book ever written, now despite the fact that some people are claiming that the book has been passed by the game, there's still a lot of really great value in this book, not to mention a great look into the legacy of the game.

Not surprisingly, the best part of the book is Brunson's chapter on limit Hold'em. First of all, he's the most engaging voice in the book. You can almost hear the Texas Dolly's famous drawl. Admittedly, the game has caught up a little--because of this book, in many cases--but SuperSystem still is a great guide for how to play solid, aggressive poker, although it's advice that has to be taken cautiously, since playing too aggressively without safeguards can lead to substantial losses.

Despite the title, however, the Super System talked about in this book is not really a system of play. It's not a specific structure of play, but more like a set of ideas or guidelines on how to play poker like Doyle. It's kind of like sitting down for a good conversation about poker with legends like Doyle, Mike Caro, David Sklansky, etc. You come away with wisdom, but you still have a lot of work to do on your own.

Still well worth the cover price.

4 out of 5 stars Book about all different kinds of poker   January 14, 2009
M. Thomas (Baltimore, Maryland)
I was looking for a book about poker, assuming that it would have quite a bit of info about Texas Hold Em. This book has info about every type of poker you could imagine. If you are wondering techniques for all types of poker, there is a section in this book for you.
