Too much sudsy head, not enough body May 22, 2009 Jordan (Scottsdale) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Just a big tease, with hints of Robbins' whimsical word art. Awaiting his next full-bodied work, hopefully returning to the former glory of Skinny Legs & All. Will have many brewski's to tide me over.
Genius May 18, 2009 S. Holic 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Robbins is a master. Another sure to be classic that I can read aloud to daughter.
Always something fun from Tomhttp://www.amazon.com/review/create-review/ref=pe_6680_11889730_cm_cr_ec_add_1_h_c11889730?ie=UTF8& May 18, 2009 A. Bennett (Pittsburgh, PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I learned a lot more about beer while getting some wry laughs from Tom's sortie into risky grown-up/kiddie lit. You know it's going to be a fun read if Tom wrote it, and so it is. I'd say it's for true fans, rather than recommending it for a first-time Tom Robbins reader.
Novella - Why Not? Cheers!!! May 16, 2009 Pegi Eyers (Canada) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Why the negativity? If Tom Robbins wants to write a brilliant and charming little novella, I say, why not! He is, after all, the master of a literary genre he single-handedly created, starting with "Another Roadside Attraction" and followed by an inspired series of hip and comic masterpieces. As Buddhists and creative people know, one needs to return to "beginner mind" - back to the basics, over and over - for insight and inspiration to occur. Robbins' choice of the short novel format this time around is his stroke of genius. Without becoming simplistic the brevity of "B Is for Beer" gives it even more impact, and as opposed to what the too-intellectual jaded over-analytical pundits say, Robbins has written a delightful parable about the human need for connection to the divine - the Great Mystery - and the occasional role beer has to play in that process. (!!) Through his lovable and memorable characters we are lucky once again to experience his unique brand of magic realism, sardonic wit and brilliant insights on human existence. His portrayal of the main character, 6-year-old Gracie, perfectly evokes the tenderness and innocence of childhood. I loved it - GREAT READ - SKOAL!!!!
a major disappointment May 16, 2009 Simone Oltolina (Morbio Inferiore, TI Switzerland) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm afraid most reviewers here are correct: this is a disappointing novel(la), a sub-par effort that feels lazy and pointless (although pointless acts are something Robbins' characters might actually applaud).
There is too much talk about the actual process of how beer is made (no, I don't think this was commissioned by the beer industry, as another reviewer pointed out, but still...), the characters are not developed to the point where they get interesting and, bluntly put, there is not enough steam to make the wheels go round.
Granted, now and then the narrative releases some of Robbins' wild genius, mostly in the form of witty sentences that bring to mind the gonzo-philosophic musings of his greater works, but the whole remains weak, at best.
Still, I love this author too much and I'm eagerly awaiting for his next novel, hoping, for a start, that it's actually going to be a novel and not some kind of weird experiment that only manages to leave a sour taste in your mouth.
