Follow-up game to 2007's critically acclaimed Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the PlayStation 3 exclusive Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a continuation of the adventures of Nathan Drake, a fortune-hunter with a shady reputation and an even shadier past. Chock full of all the action, adventure, cinematic story elements and beautiful graphics that set the first game apart, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves adds deep online multiplayer options, including co-op and competitive campaigns, and a whole new supporting cast of characters, making it yet another must-have title for the PlayStation 3 platform.

Story
In Uncharted 2: Amongst Thieves fortune hunter Nathan Drake embarks on a journey that will push him to his physical, emotional and intellectual limits to discover the real truth behind the lost fleet of Marco Polo and the legendary Himalayan valley of Shambhala, more commonly known in the west as Shangri-La.

In 1292 Marco Polo departed the court of Kublai Khan in China with 14 ships filled with over 600 passengers and crew. Eighteen months later only one ship remained and 18 passengers survived. Marco Polo never revealed what happened to these lost ships. Embarking on a quest to find the lost fleet, fortune hunter Nathan Drake soon realizes Marco Polo was hiding a much bigger secret - he had gone on a secret expedition to find the mythical kingdom of Shambhala and to recover the legendary Cintamani Stone, the "Wish-fulfilling jewel" of Buddhist mythology. With this new information Drake settles on a new course, following Marco Polo's trail through a diverse range of exotic environments. This quest also pits him against a new, more formidable adversary - a ruthless, rogue paramilitary leader with a private army and a relentless ambition to recover the stone for himself.

Gameplay
Although gameplay in Among Thieves is similar to that of the previous game, there are several major differences. The most important of these is the addition of several online multiplayer options. Unfortunately, no offline multiplayer could be included in the game due to the impact local split-screening has on the game's graphical quality. Thankfully though, the online modes included cover both co-op and competitive play. See the feature list below for details on these. In addition to play modes players can also expect a wealth of new gameplay features including a new stealth gameplay mechanic and altered climbing mechanic--both of which are extended to the AI of enemies; the ability to create cover by flipping over certain found items; the use of riot shields for defense and offense; and a complete lack of loading screens.

4 out of 5 stars An interactive, but pretty, movie   July 26, 2010

I hate the concept of an interactive movie for a video-game. I feel that video-games and movies are two completely different mediums, and that trying to cross the two is kind of stupid. This game only serves as a reminder for me. It's still pretty fun, though.
The action is usually fast-paced and exciting. I loved the little moments where you would sneak up on three guards, take one out with a stealth attack, shoot one, go hand-to-hand with the last one for a slow-motion take-down, and then jump from a broken wall open wall onto the roof of another building. One exciting scene involves you a building falling down with you in it!
The game has tons of small to huge annoyances, though, that really drag it down.
The difficulty is all over the place, the levels are often boring, and the game is ridiculously linear. The climbing sequences are terrible--more often than not, there'll be three or four objects that look climbable, with only one being actually climbable, and if you guess the wrong one, you'll fall to your death. The first game had this problem, too, but lacked this game's utter dependency on platforming and climbing. I'm not some hard-core "if you're spending even a nanosecond not shooting someone something needs to change" kind of person; I like the 3d platformer genre for the most part. This one, not so much.

I personally don't like the story, but it doesn't detract from the game either. I do wish, though, since it's trying to be an interactive movie, that they had tried to make the characters more likable. None of the new characters were relatable or likable, and returning characters had an air of "tada! I'm back!".

The graphics are amazing. I mean, really amazing. And not just from a technical standpoint, from an artistic standpoint as well. The animations are superb, top of their class.
The sound is great, too. The voice acting, especially.

There are about 20 levels in the game. The game gets off to a very bad start. In the first level you can barely move. It makes sense in the story, but it makes for horribly dull gameplay. There's one easy enemy in this level, and that's it. In the second you can't shoot anyone. I understand that the purpose of this level is to teach stealth, but they could've easily done that in a third the time. Then you're in some jungle for a few levels, with about ten minutes to get used to actually fighting enemies, and then you're completely swarmed with 50 or so. The rest of the game is a mish-mash of short fighting scenes, fleeing from vehicles (usually a helicopter, sometimes a tank), jumping off rooftops, climbing walls, and climbing walls to solve "puzzles". For three levels or so you're on a moving train. There are some other really cool sequences too, like when you're jumping from car to car on the edge of a cliff. Towards the end it goes into some ridiculous "run away" gameplay mode, and you spend a whole level running and swerving. Then there are a couple of huge battles. And then there's the boss. The boss is pathetic. There's none of the stealth, cover, platforming, or hand-to-hand combat from earlier levels, just a bunch of short-range shooting. And then it's over. All of that is about 6-12 hours long, depending on your skill level. Most of the levels are fun and exciting, however, the ones with climbing or puzzle-solving are going to bore you.

I liked this game, but it doesn't come close to the hype. It's definitely worth renting--you'll probably be done with it in a few days anyway. Most people will love this game. While not without its flaws, it's at least a fun ride while it lasts.

5 out of 5 stars Best Game I've ever played   July 21, 2010

Buy this game if only to encourage them to create more games of its caliber. The single player I've played 4 times already and I am notorious for playing a game once and selling it before I even finish. The multi-player is great but the Co-op is the BEST. It nevers gets boring and its never generic point and shoot like Modern Warfare 2.
