Crank Power Does NOT Work February 14, 2010 -Bill As far as I'm concerned, the only reason to purchase a device of this type is the crank power feature. I can purchase AA battery powered flashlight that is 10x smaller and lighter than this thing that puts out better light. I can purchase a AA battery powered radio that is smaller, lighter, and has better reception than this thing.
So, the crank feature is all I really care about. Does it work? Heck NO. The biggest defect in this device is the "rechargeable battery" and its connection. It broke pretty much right out of the package. Second time I tried plugging the rechargeable battery in, the entire connection pushed into the device and broke. I'm basically left with two loose wires for a battery connection. Extremely flimsy wiring.
The rechargeable battery is a joke. Its one of those tiny little round batteries normally used in watches or key fob. Capable of powering a single LED. Definitely not capable of powering a radio for longer than 30 seconds.
Mediocre quality September 12, 2009 W. Morgan While the radio bands and alert worked fine, the LED flashlight and reading lamp did not work as expected. I was finally able to turn on the reading lamp if I raised the arm just the right way, but the flashlight never worked.
I returned this item for a refund.
Seems to be good, but weatherband doesn't work for me September 12, 2009 H. Gray (Mesa, AZ) When I first got this radio, I cranked it right away and tried to get it to work with no luck, only then did I realize that you have to put the battery in in order for it to store the cranked power--duh :). Anyway, I was able to get radio stations that are normally difficult to get, but I wasn't able to get the emergency weather station. Everything else seems to work as promised, but I haven't tried the cell phone charger yet.
LGTF38 Radio/Light September 12, 2009 S. Hopson (Virginia) The first unit I received was defective- Appeared to have been dropped/treated roughly. The replacement unit, from Amazon in about 2 days, was fine.
The radio itself is like all "one size fits all" devices- does everything OK, but nothing is great. It does have a "Way cool" reading light built into the carry handle. The radio functions as expected, but the flashlight function is of little use- not particularly bright, and cumbersome to use.
All in all, it's OK, and not too pricey. If you are buying a similar unit, one without the flashlight is preferable.
Terrible weather band reception, never received accessories August 10, 2009 A. Kerin (Boston, MA) In two places I have lived, this radio does a terrible job of receiving the weather band transmissions. I have compared its reception to another brand, cheaper, weather radio, and the cheaper model far outperformed the Life Gear. So, it sucks at performing its one vital role, warning you of bad weather.
I also ordered the 'free' cell phone accessory and charger - shipping costs were very high. The cell phone adapter took a month to arrive and was not the right size. I never received the charger.
Skip this dreadful radio and go for a one that has SAME technology and can actually pick up the broadcasts.
