Amazon.com essential video Inspired by the 1960s TV series that starred James Garner in the title role, this lightweight Western from 1994 proved to be a surprising box-office hit. Well, maybe not such a big surprise, since it's from the star and director of the Lethal Weapon movies, and operates with a similar combination of mainstream plotting and easygoing humor. Mel Gibson stars as card-playing gunslinger Brett Maverick, who meets up with wily gambler Annabelle Bransford (Jodie Foster) and a marshal named Zane Cooper (James Garner, trading his old role to Gibson) on his way to the World Series of poker in St. Louis. Maverick's trying to raise the $5,000 needed to join the high-stakes contest, but that's easier said than done due to a lot of unscrupulous competition and a twisting plot of tricks and deceptions. It's all played for laughs and action, so the movie never wears out its welcome, despite a running time that could've used a good trimming. It's also fun to see the rapport between Gibson and Garner, as if the present and former Mavericks were a kind of surrogate son and father, bonded by their mutual skill in charming and conning their way through tight spots. Director Richard Donner also pays tribute to old Westerns by casting veterans of the genre in cameo roles (including Bert Remsen, Dub Taylor, and Denver Pyle), and Gibson's Lethal Weapon costar Danny Glover pops in for a surprise appearance. None of this really adds up to much since the movie makes no pretense about taking itself seriously, but that's precisely why audiences found it so entertaining. --Jeff Shannon
Amazon.com The joined-at-the-hip team of director Richard Donner and star Mel Gibson (all the Lethal Weapon movies and Conspiracy Theory) had obvious fun resurrecting the Wild Western comedy television series about a roguish rambler-gambler. Gibson assumes the role of cardsharp Bret Maverick, equally quick with a pair of aces and a pair of guns. Good sport James Garner (who played Maverick on TV) takes another role, as a lawman who travels alongside the hero to a big-money poker game on a riverboat. The real peach in this fruit salad of satire and broad jokes, however, is Jodie Foster, who plays a crafty Southern belle quite adept at poker herself. Sexy, funny, and (from the onscreen evidence) a great kisser, Foster has never been more of a delight. Written by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). --Tom Keogh

So fake that it becomes funny August 1, 2010 Jacques COULARDEAU (OLLIERGUES France) A worthy little film on the far west the way we can see it today, a big farce. Everything is false. A woman is playing poker and picking pockets. A Marshall is robbing the bank of a poker competition, with the agreement of the organizer. All kinds of players who are cheating and trying to win with weapons or violence, or even unfair padlocks. Indians who are organizing wagon train attacks for some dollars and the killing of some fake Indians still for a lot of money from a Russian ambassador. In one word everything is false, a big lie and a big laugh between or among the gun fire and the bullets. And yet all those crooks are trying to steal one another and the only woman in the tale will get the last word, except that she will only get a small part of the stake. Never put all your eggs in one basket. The only real interest of this film is not to show you what the far west used to be but to make you enjoy a comedy about it and that comedy is of course absurd. And that's why it is funny with some good actors who can play surprise and fear and joy and pleasure (you see the one I mean) and horror just as if the rattle snake under their feet were a real rattle snake. It sounds like one all right but it is nothing but a fake plastic rattling device and it won't bite. Even though they had a rattle snake tamer on the team, or rather because. I guess he is the one who dubbed them for the rattling to sound really real. Speaking of Canada Dry. Well we are in the country of the saints, Saint Louis and so many others down to New Orleans.

A Must-Buy-------You Won't Be Sorry May 6, 2010 K. Laurey (Clark Mills, NY USA) There are probably lots of 'older' releases that you haven't gotten around to seeing---if this version of "Maverick" is one of them, then remedy that---pronto, pardner.
Not a 'serious' Western, it's nonetheless one of the most entertaining offerings you'll ever see. The director is in full control here, and he does a whiz-bang job. The storyline, action and comedy flow along as smooth as buttermilk, and the cast: it couldn't be better. It was a gamble (pun intended) for any actor to try to step into the boots of James Garner, the original television Bret Maverick (here, very amusingly cast as a lawman of sorts)---but Mel pulls it off handsomely. He captures the character's offbeat charm perfectly, and even when he's being less than above-board, we can't help but root for his Maverick, because----as Jodie Foster's "Mrs. Bransford" puts it: "There he goes, bein' all likable again." Foster herself is an absolute delight, in an atypical role as a faux-Southern belle with a slightly tarnished clapper. (Think that'll get by the mighty Amazon Censor?) She oozes "oomph" here, and has a smoldering chemistry with Gibson. It's a mystery as to why a sequel didn't appear...possibly because the screenplay by William Goldman is so hard to top. The whole cast follows the light mood, all the way, and you'll find yourself laughing even after repeated viewings. This is a keeper---buy it !!!
Mel Gibson at his funniest! March 17, 2010 Orca (Elgin, IL) This movie is quite hilarous! From Brett Maverick getting robbed to almost being hanged then almost loosing his money you dont konw what will happen next or what joke he ll crack. If anyone loves comedy then this is a must see!!

Enjoyable film & very reasonably priced /dvd cover format is neat January 30, 2010 Nelson Conti I have always liked "Maverick" because it is both funny and entertaining. I wanted the DVD, and felt that the DVD cover format (keepcase) is neat and more practical than the traditional DVD cover format. The price is very reasonable.
