Doyle Brunson wrote the Book about how good he is. July 4, 2009 Sergejs Popovs As far as becoming a better player this book is of very little value. Most of the book is just a bunch of stories about what happened to him, and how cool he is. He wrote a lot about his friends, which is pretty annoying. Book is huge and covers a lot of games that i don't think people play anymore. Stats were considered very useful when the book was written but now you can find all that stuff online for free.
I found book hard to read because it had very little information about improving your game.
I also believe the game evolved since then, so advice is not relevant. For example the chapter on general strategy is so basic that you feel cheated after you read it.
Super System isn't so super April 16, 2009 B. Fleischman (denver co) Not that impressed with the book. I felt others are better. Nice thing about this book however, is it covers more games than just holdem. It is more about theory than nitty gritty details (like what starting hands to begin with) Covers alot of reading your opponent, but Caro's book is better. I found it OK, not stellar, but OK. I wouldn't recommend this as your only poker book - but as a secondary book it is acceptable.
Learn From The Best March 19, 2009 RockNRandy (Milwaukee,Wi) Get into the mind of one of the greats.Doyle has been there done that, you can feel it when you first crack open the book.I actually started playing better.
Texas Dolly remains nearly unmatched. February 22, 2009 Jarc23 (Tennessee, USA) When it was written it was called the greatest poker book ever written, now despite the fact that some people are claiming that the book has been passed by the game, there's still a lot of really great value in this book, not to mention a great look into the legacy of the game.
Not surprisingly, the best part of the book is Brunson's chapter on limit Hold'em. First of all, he's the most engaging voice in the book. You can almost hear the Texas Dolly's famous drawl. Admittedly, the game has caught up a little--because of this book, in many cases--but SuperSystem still is a great guide for how to play solid, aggressive poker, although it's advice that has to be taken cautiously, since playing too aggressively without safeguards can lead to substantial losses.
Despite the title, however, the Super System talked about in this book is not really a system of play. It's not a specific structure of play, but more like a set of ideas or guidelines on how to play poker like Doyle. It's kind of like sitting down for a good conversation about poker with legends like Doyle, Mike Caro, David Sklansky, etc. You come away with wisdom, but you still have a lot of work to do on your own.
Still well worth the cover price.
Book about all different kinds of poker January 14, 2009 M. Thomas (Baltimore, Maryland) I was looking for a book about poker, assuming that it would have quite a bit of info about Texas Hold Em. This book has info about every type of poker you could imagine. If you are wondering techniques for all types of poker, there is a section in this book for you.
